Windows 11 did an update and now my Google Chrome and Yahoo mail will not open. They are both displaying a message that says:
The application has failed to start because the side-by-side configuration is incorrect.
How do i fix this? Please help.

Hi @Doane7,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
The "side-by-side configuration is incorrect" error typically occurs due to issues with the Visual C++ Redistributables, which are required for many applications, including Chrome and Yahoo Mail apps, to function correctly. Here’s how to resolve this issue:
1. Repair or Reinstall Visual C++ Redistributables
- Press Windows + X and select Apps and Features.
- Search for entries like:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015-2022 Redistributables.
- For each entry:
- Click on it and select Modify.
- Choose Repair.
- If repairing doesn’t help, uninstall them and reinstall from Microsoft’s official site:
2. Perform SFC and DISM Scans
These tools can fix corrupted system files that may cause this error.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
- Press Windows + S, type cmd, right-click, and select Run as Administrator.
- Run the following commands one at a time:
- SFC Scan:
- DISM Scan:
- Restart your computer after the scans are complete.
3. Reset or Reinstall Google Chrome
- If Chrome is corrupted, you may need to reset or reinstall it.
- To reset:
- Press Windows + R, type chrome://settings/reset, and press Enter.
- To reinstall:
- Uninstall Chrome via Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Download the latest version from Google Chrome's official site.
4. Check for Pending Windows Updates
Sometimes, incomplete updates can cause compatibility issues.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Navigate to Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install any pending updates and restart your computer.
5. Review Event Viewer Logs
The Event Viewer can provide more insight into the specific error.
- Press Windows + S, type Event Viewer, and open it.
- Navigate to Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for errors related to Chrome or Yahoo Mail and note the details.
6. Additional Troubleshooting Steps
- Test in Safe Mode: Boot into Safe Mode and try opening Chrome/Yahoo Mail to see if third-party software is interfering.
- Check Antivirus or Firewall: Ensure your security software isn’t blocking these apps.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!
