I think this describes my laptop:
HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 Laptop 16, Windows 11 Pro, 16", Touch screen, Intel® Core™ Ultra 7, 16GB RAM, 2TB SSD, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4050, 2.8K, Nightfall black
I have an old external display now, but I'd like to upgrade it to whatever the laptop can output thru its external video or USB-C ports. Is thunderbolt the best option? And the display?
Current display is a Dell U3011 with a max resolution of 2560x1600

It have
2 Thunderbolt™ 4 with USB Type-C® 40Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 2.1, HP Sleep and Charge)
Regards.

That is a very tricky one depending on the version of your HDMI cable you may only get 1920 x 1080 resolution. You need a very expensive TB4 dock or simply use USB-C to DP monitor.
