Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended
HP Spectre x360 - 13-aw0163tu
Microsoft Windows 11

After opening my laptop, logging in, and moving my cursor up, a black screen appears from the bottom of my screen and moves up and down with my cursor.  The top of the black screen stays just below my cursor.   The top of the display screen stays where it should at the top of the physical screen.  Having a second screen connected in extend mode above the laptop and moving the curser to that screen it has the same problem with the black screen following the curser up and down.  Only rebooting the laptop gets rid of this problem until the next time it reoccurs.  My drivers are fully updated and run the current Window 11 v25H2 but this intermittent problem has been occurring with previous versions and driver updates for a couple of years now.  Very annoying.

Hi @lloydstone,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you are experiencing a display issue with your HP device, where a black screen follows your cursor movements. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and possibly resolve this problem:

Troubleshooting Steps

Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your graphics drivers are up-to-date. Visit https://support.hp.com/us-en to download the latest drivers for your specific model.

Check Display Settings: Review your display settings to ensure they are configured correctly. Right-click on the desktop, select "Display settings," and check if both monitors are set to their native resolutions and refresh rates.

Graphics Adapter Check: If you’re using an HP graphics adapter, make sure the driver is installed properly:

  • Insert the provided driver disc or download the latest drivers from the HP support website.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to ensure that the adapter is functioning correctly.

Re-check Connections: Ensure that all cables connecting to the monitors and your laptop are secure and not damaged. Sometimes a loose connection can cause display issues.

Use Built-in Diagnostics: HP devices often come with built-in diagnostics. You can usually access these by pressing F2 or ESC during startup. This can help identify hardware-related issues.

Checking for Windows Updates: Ensure your Windows operating system is fully updated, as Microsoft sometimes includes important bug fixes in updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
