HP ENVY 15 q493cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have HP ENVY 15 q493cl windows 10 20H2 edition. After power on, I always get a black screen for about 10 minutes. What can cause this?

I have two display cards onboard as seen from device manager:

1. Intel graphics 530

2. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M

IS there any way to solve this issue?

Welcome to the HP support community.

Update the Bios, chipset, and display drivers using HP Support Assistant.

Download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: Click here

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also, ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for the reply.

There are no windows updates pending. The HPSA did not suggest any updates.

Please suggest next steps.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! I have studied the individual points mentioned in the link. However they are not applicable to the current situation.

My laptop came with windows 10 installed (no update was done). The laptop has no issues starting from sleep/ hibernate. When I do a power on start after proper shutdown, screen is black for 10 minutes, then the login screen comes. That is the issue.

FYI- I also have 2 display adapters seen in device manager - Intel HD Graphics 530 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M. These came in the laptop while buying the laptop. Could there by any conflict in drivers while startup - just asking?

Go to the energy options and change the settings for screen blanking on inactivity. Does this influence the time when the screen turns black?

And can you please confirm that you actually work with your laptop (moving the mouse, using the keyboard) and not only watch youtube or netflix?

The other day I took it from the warranty repair with the same problem, this is a dying SSD drive.
And this problem was from the very first day of purchase, if the system was booted. then no problems arose. I advise you to install software for diagnostics of disks and make sure of it.

Hi Sigpamscreennam,

Thanks for the reply.

Could you please specify what I could look at for power options?

FYI- I dont use netflix or youtube

Hi Bmwetkpower,

Thanks for the reply!

This is a hard disk drive..

I also see that when screen is the black during boot caps lock can be turned on and off. So it is active probably.
