HP Laptop PC 15-da3016cy
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

There was a recent update to windows10 from version 20H1 to 21H2. Since the update, my Synaptics SMbus touchpad doesn't work the way it did before the update. Previously, I was able to disable the touchpad when my HP wireless mouse was present. This no longer works. Also, the touchpad doesn't work on the touchscreen on the laptop. I think there is supposed to be a tab on the mouse settings to disable the touchpad, but it no longer appears on the mouse settings. The warranty on the laptop expired 2 months ago. I am hesitant to renew a plan if there is no solution to the problem. The HP Support website indicates that there is no driver for the new version of Windows10.

Never saw the tab to make the change. That was the problem. A Microsoft Support Tech ran an upgrade and it fixed the issue. Thanks for your input along the way.

Hi @JimZ4

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I see that you have updated your Windows to the latest version i.e. 21H2 and soon after that you are facing issues with the touchpad of your HP Laptop PC 15-Da3016cy.

Let's try a couple of steps and check if the issue persists.

Update touchpad drivers

  • Open Device Manager.
  • To find touchpad devices, select Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices, then right-click (or press and hold) the device you'd like to update.
  • Select Update Driver.

If that doesn't work, reinstall the driver and let me know the outcome.

Reinstall touchpad drivers

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Right-click (or press and hold) the name of the device, then select Uninstall device.
  • Select Uninstall and then restart your PC.
  • Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

I would also suggest you update BIOS, Chipset, and Synaptics TouchPad Driver (Under the keyboard, mouse, input devices) using the link given. Click here

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I  uninstalled the drivers and reinstall them. It did not work. I went to the link you provided, selected Windows10 as the OS . On the drop down for the versions that were supported there were only Windows10 2004 (64bit) and Windows10 20H2 (64bit) . There was a note below "If your operating system is not listed then HP may not provide driver support for your product with that operating system." . My version is 21H2.

There were instructions to contact the Manufacturer of the Touchpad (Synaptics), which I did. They did not have a solution and recommended I contact the Manufacturer of the laptop.

I am currently on the hamster wheel going round and round between Manufacturers. My laptop is currently out of warranty. I am not sure if I get paid support from HP they can resolve it.

Thanks for getting back.

I understand that you are not able to fetch your driver because the 21H2 version is not available on the HP site.

You may use the link here of Synaptics TouchPad Driver and you will be able to update it: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp112501-113000/sp112836.exe

If the above link doesn't work, I would suggest you install a generic touchpad driver on your system.

  • Open Device Manager.
  • To find touchpad devices, select Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices, then right-click (or press and hold) the device you'd like to update.
  • Select Update Driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from the available drivers from my computer.
  • Select the one available and click Next to update it.

Once done, let me know how it goes.

Neither suggestion worked. I have been told that if the driver was working correctly, I would see an extra tab that would allow me to disable the touchpad when a wireless mouse is present. I worked fine on the last version which was 20H2.

Alright. Not an issue. We will have this checked.

Could you please follow the steps below and check if you are getting the option?

Step 1: Open Settings, click Devices icon, and then click Mouse & touchpad.

Step 2: Under the Touchpad section, turn off the option labeled Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected.

If the above steps are not giving the right output, try changing it from the Control Panel.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Click on Hardware and Sound.
  3. Under "Devices and Printers," click on Mouse.
  4. On the "Device Settings" tab, clear the Disable internal pointing device when the external USB pointing device is attached option.
  5. Save and check if the issue persists.

That's great!

I am happy to know that the issue resolved. If there is anything in the future, we will be happy to look into it.

Cheers!
