Whenever I update the BIOS, the boot sector of my device is erased and I am unable to boot. I need to perform a lengthy manual restore process. Is it possible to get bios updates that do not damage the boot sector er even better, do not write to the disk at all?

I looked at the revision history of your laptop and there has been no real bios improvement since F.15
It is always dangerous to upgrade bios.
Updates that improve security are needed in a corporate environment. I personally would not upgrade any BIOS that was only security related unless the PC was used in a corporate, industrial or military organization.
Check your warranty and decided if you want to risk a BIOS upgrade like these users did
Linux is not a supported OS for your laptop. That being said, I suspect the BIOS update made a change in the secure boot procedure that conflicts with how you are booting Linux.
From my own experience with Ubuntu desktop if I have secured boot enabled in BIOS, I have to install the secure boot version of Ubuntu.

Thanks for the reply. I'm dual booting this laptop with windows so I guess if I need to do a bios update then I will have to live with it.
I only did a bios update because it recommended it in another post to fix an issue I'm having. In windows the screen flickers between normal graphics, black screen and corrupted graphics. Several other people in my organisation are also suffering from this. They do not have Linux installed and they have different gfx cards. I was hoping that a bios update might fix this issue. Anyway, I will create a separate ticket for that issue.
Thanks
