Hello! I have a HP Spectre x360 laptop, and the f5 function button that acts as the backlit keyboard button does not work. The button stays lit, but upon pressing it, my entire computer crashes and has to restart. Any suggestions?

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.
The proximity sensor uses Proximity Sensor Control software to change the keyboard lighting behavior. If you are not satisfied with the way the proximity sensor is responding, try adjusting these settings to suit your needs:
-
To open the Proximity Sensor Control software click Start, All Programs, HP Proximity Sensor, HP and select HP Proximity Sensor.
-
Click the Sensitivity (Range) button to select either Maximum or Minimum range. Selecting Maximum will cause the keyboard to illuminate more often than the Minimum setting as the proximity sensor will be more sensitive.
-
Click the Delay until off button and select one of the following delay times:
-
10 Second(s)
-
1 Minute(s)
-
3 Minute(s)
-
-
The time you select is the time it takes for the keyboard illumination to turn off when not in use.
-
Click Apply.
-
Click OK to return to the Windows desktop.

The problem with the computer is not the proximity sensor or the brightness of the keyboard backlight. To manually turn on the backlit keyboard, my computer has a button (f5) that upon being pressed, turns on the lights for the keys. However, the button no longer works. Whenever I pres the f5 button, my entire computer crashes and needs to be restart.

I'm the Riddle_Decipher & I'm writing on behalf of my colleague @Raj1788, as the tech is out for the day,
that said, I have reviewed your concern and the entire conversation, did some research and here's what I recommend:
Let's start with updating the BIOS: Click here to find and install the same,
Once done, In Windows, press fn (function key) and the backlight key. If this does not work, check the BIOS Setup Utility to verify if Action Keys Mode is disabled, or if the backlight feature is an option and is disabled.
Your BIOS version and screens might vary.
Also, try creating a new user account and check if that works.

Keep us posted,
(We shall troubleshoot as a team, fight till the end and emerge - "victorious")

Hello! I went ahead and updated my BIOS, as well as enabling and disabling my Action Keys, however, my computer still crashes when I try to turn on my backlit keyboard 😞
I am not sure what else I can do. It is becoming annoying because I cannot type in the dark

I am responding on behalf of @Riddle_Decipher as he is out for the day. It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.
I recommend you uninstall the keyboard driver from device manager and then restart the computer and check whether the keyboard backlight is working.
Here is how it is done.
- Start Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Device Manager.
- Expand the node that represents the type of device that you want to uninstall, right-click the device entry, and click Uninstall.
- On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK to start the uninstall process.
- When the uninstall process is complete, remove the device.
NOTE: On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click the Delete the driver software for this device option to delete the driver package that was used for the device.
Let me know how it goes. Awaiting your reply!
