I am a hight school student in an after-school computer club. A teacher donated their laptop because they got a new one. We took it apart and found a puffy battery. We got a replacement but while replacing it accidentally plugged it in backwards due to a cheap peice that was supposed to prevent it. We realized this and plugged it in the right way. When we plugged it in it booted up fine except the battery was stuck at 51 percent and died when unplugged. We decided to diagnose it with it plugged in and found issues with the keyboard. Some keys do things they aren't supposed to. Backspace disables the keyboard, arrow keys turn off the computer, and the keyboard will randomly permanently toccle control, so when you push P for example it will open the prining menu. We figured the backwards battery fried the battery controller and parts of the motherboard. But the teacher said there were issues with the keyboard before they donated it. I'm wondering if there is some sort of fix or if we will have to replace the motherboard. If we have to do the latter we will probably just salvage all the components we can.

Edit we tested the battery pins with a multimeter and they got the correct voltage and resistance when plugged in but not when unplugged.
