Black bar through center of screen/no physical damage/rest of screen is fine and working

I opened my laptop to find a long black bar maybe 4-5 inches long going through the center of my screen. There are no indications of any physical damages or impacts. The device is used quite frequently and worked the day or two prior to this. I just opened it to see the screen messed up. 

 the device has had issues prior but nothing that wasn't instantly solvable. And im wondering what the issue could be as the rest of the device works fine other than this one issue i have checked the graphics card and driver and the system. From my own research it might be a LCD issue? Was also wondering how do I check to see if my device is under warranty and repairable.

It is a hp laptop 17. I do believe I dont have a warranty purchased with the device as my family has checked and I did schedule a repair for the device in the coming week.
