Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

HP Pavilion G7-1070 notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This laptop boots and works fine and displays on an external monitor via hdmi.  Its built-in display remains black--no backlight or dim image.  I've done a hard reset, reinstalled the video driver with no luck and rebooted many times.  Does anyone have any suggestions for diagnosing the problem?  My theory is that the gpu is good if there is external monitor output, leaving a bad connection, bad video cable or bad lcd panel.  The laptop is old, but in great shape other than the recent video problem.  It was working well until airline people handled it.  The owner doesn't need all the bells and whistles of a new laptop and I hate to just trash a nice laptop.  Any help would be appreciated.
