@kempdavidneal, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear about the issue with your HP Envy laptop. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the black screen problem:
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
- Hold the power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter (leave the battery out if it was removable) and turn on the laptop.
Check the Display Brightness:
- Sometimes the display brightness might be turned all the way down. Use the keyboard's brightness keys (usually marked with a sun icon) to adjust it.
Connect an External Monitor:
- Attach your laptop to an external monitor or TV. If the external display works, the issue might be with your laptop's screen.
BIOS Recovery:
- Disconnect all devices from your laptop.
- Press and hold the Windows + B keys together, then press the power button while holding these keys. Keep holding the keys until you hear beeping or the BIOS recovery screen appears.
Re-seat the RAM:
- Loose RAM can cause a black screen. If you're comfortable doing so, power off the laptop, open the back panel, and re-seat the RAM sticks.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
