@Maureen85, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A black screen on your HP notebook after a forced shutdown can be caused by several issues. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially fix the problem:

Perform a Hard Reset

This clears any residual power that might be causing the issue.

  • Turn off the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • If the battery is removable, take it out.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter.
  • Turn the laptop back on.

Check the Display

Make sure the issue isn’t with the screen itself:

  • Shine a flashlight at an angle on the screen. If you see a faint image, the backlight might be faulty.
  • Try connecting the laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI or VGA. If the external display works, the issue is likely with the laptop screen or its connection.

Reset BIOS

Sometimes the BIOS can get corrupted:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds.
  • Release the power button but keep holding Windows + B until you hear beeping or see the screen light up.

Boot into Safe Mode

If the screen turns on but Windows doesn’t load properly:

  • Turn the laptop on and off 3 times to trigger Windows Recovery.
  • Choose Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  • Press F4 to boot into Safe Mode.

Hi, I should've mentioned that I did all those things already. I took my laptop in for repair and was told that the optane drive needed to be reseated, then turned off. Apparently optane has been discontinued because it caused so many issues, and mine is now off. As a result my laptop is now working again. Has anyone heard about HP covering repair costs due to optane drive issues like this?
