The problem wirh my laptop is that sometimes i can work with it without it going into blacksceeen. I can sometimes work for hours without any trouble. Other times in the middle of my work it goes into blackscreen. I quickly attach an external monitor to conrinue w/my work and after half an hour or more the monitor on my laptoo turns on again. Sometimes the black screen goes on on start up. If you shine a light on the monitor while it is on black screen, you could see the display without its backlight. Tried the hard reset but it didn't work. What to do? They say there's somethin wrong w/the graphics card and needs to be reballed, reheated or replaced.

Hello @Ed_77,

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums, I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.

I read your post about the black screen issue, and wanted to assist you!  I understand that the display will work on the external monitor.

To start, can you provide me with the Product Number of the notebook?  Here is a link you can use that will help you find your Model and Product Number:
HP Customer Support - Products

The issue is likely software related.  Have you tried updating the Graphics, BIOS, and Chipset drivers?  You can do so by going to this site. Once there, input your Product Number and click "Find my product".  On the next page, select your Operating System and click "Update".  You should be able to access and download the drivers.  Please post back with the results.

Hello sir!

The model of my laptop is HP G62-346NR and the product number is XH073UA#ABA.  I tried to look for a driver for the ATI RADEON HD 4200 SERIES but couldn't find any that was compatible with Windows 10 64-bit OS.  I also browsed the AMD website for the corresponding drivers but didn't find any either.

I still think it is a software issue rather than an hardware issue but the question is, are there any driver updates for the graphics card installed?  Or, is it possible to upgrade my graphics card?

Please accept my apologies for not replying back as soon as possible.  I was in a place where there was poor internet signal and I had to stay there for a week or so.

Hello @Ed_77,

That is no problem!

The issue is indeed more than likely software related.  If there are driver updates available for the Graphics Card on the HP site, you can definitely try to update it.  However, the Graphics Card hardware itself, is not upgradable in HP notebooks.  By chance, did you start to have this issue after upgrading to the Windows 10 Operating System?  It seems that there are no drivers available for your notebook, that will work with Windows 10, on the HP site.  It looks like Windows 10 drivers for your product, are being pushed through the Windows Update.  That will be the best place to start.  You can try checking this site as well:

HP Products - Where Do I Find Windows 10 Drivers and Software for My Model?

If you are having trouble installing the drivers, you can use the tool at the following site:

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter

It is possible that drivers may not be available for your product.  If that is the case, or the drivers you found are not working, try using the solutions on this site as a workaround, and let me know how it goes: How to: Install and Update drivers in Windows 10

I hope this helps.

Have a great weekend!

Hi SDF15!

It's me again with my old laptop with the same problem. As things turned out, it was actually the graphics card that was the source of my headache and frustrations. As time progressed, it took a longer waiting time for my external monitor to light up when I connect it to the laptop, unlike before it was almost instantaneous the monitor lights up when connected to the laptop. Then the other day, the display was totally black. No image! Not even when you shine a flashlight in it.
A friend of mine who had the same problem told me that it was the video card that's causing all of this. He recommended to wrap the vents with a towel and let the computer run for about half an hour to let it heat up and in the process reflow the graphics card.
It worked on my laptop! But somehow, I know that this is a temporary fix. Can you recommend a store or site where you can get an ATI RADEON HD 4200 SERIES graphics card or motherboard compatible with my processor?
Many thanks in advanced!
