Hello,
I've had my HP Envy x360 for six months, and now both the touchscreen and trackpad have stopped working.
I've noticed that others have had problems with the touchscreen, and I've followed the advice given to these users (update drivers, etc) but have had no joy.
When the computer is started with the diagnostics tool, the touchscreen appears fine - the trackpad doesn't appear to exist though. When restarted, the touchscreen goes back into its dead state...
When I click on the I2C HID Device, and tell it to update the driver, the message comes back that the driver is up to date. This is true of all the other HID devices.
It's very frustrating!
Digging further, I've found this:
Does this mean anything to anyone...?

Hi @Gez00,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
The error "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" typically indicates a driver issue or a hardware problem. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help troubleshoot and resolve the I2C HID Device issue on your HP Envy x360 15.6-inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 15-fh0000:
Step 1: Uninstall and Reinstall the I2C HID Device
Open Device Manager:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
Find the I2C HID Device:
- Expand the Human Interface Devices section and find the I2C HID Device.
Uninstall the Driver:
- Right-click the I2C HID Device and select Uninstall Device.
- In the pop-up window, check the box for Delete the driver software for this device (if available), and click Uninstall.
Restart Your Laptop:
- After uninstalling, restart the system. Windows should automatically reinstall the default driver after rebooting.
Step 2: Update Your System’s Chipset Drivers
The I2C HID device is linked to the chipset drivers. Make sure you have the latest version:
Download the Latest Chipset Driver:
- Visit the HP Support Website and search for your laptop’s model (HP Envy x360 15-fh0000).
- Download and install the latest chipset drivers from the Driver-Chipset section.
- Also update the Elan Precision Touchpad filter driver under- Keyboard, Mouse and input devices.
Install and Restart:
- After installation, restart your computer to apply the changes.
Step 3: Run Windows Update
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for Updates and allow Windows to install any available updates.
- Ensure you install any optional updates under the Optional Updates section, as this often includes driver updates.
Step 4: Disable and Re-enable the HID Device
Sometimes, simply disabling and re-enabling the device can help.
- Open Device Manager and navigate to Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the I2C HID Device and choose Disable.
- Wait a few seconds, then right-click it again and choose Enable.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @Gez00,
Please find the remaining steps below.
Step 5: Reset the Power of HID Devices
Resetting the power of HID devices can resolve the issue:
- Open Device Manager.
- Find I2C HID Device, right-click it, and choose Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Click OK and restart the system.
Step 6: Check for Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Click on Additional troubleshooters > Hardware and Devices and run the troubleshooter. Follow the on-screen prompts to resolve any hardware-related issues.
Step 7: BIOS Update
If the issue persists, it could be due to an outdated BIOS:
- Go to the HP Support website and check if a BIOS update is available for your HP Envy x360 model.
- Download and install the latest BIOS update, then restart your laptop.
Step 8: Perform a System Restore (Optional)
If this issue started after a recent update or driver installation, you can try performing a System Restore:
- Press Windows + S, type Create a restore point, and open the System Properties.
- Click System Restore and select a restore point from before the issue occurred.
If none of the above solutions resolve the issue, it could be a hardware problem with the I2C HID controller. In that case, contacting HP Phone Support or visiting a service center may be necessary.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Thanks for your response.
Despite trying all of the suggested, nothing worked. An attempt at reinstalling Windows - under the guidance of HP Support - also failed, leading to an un-bootable machine.
It has now been sent off for repair.
All the best
