Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

HP Pavilion 17t-ab200 CTO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The bottom half of my laptop (HP Pavilion 17t-ab200) screen flickers. When I move the laptop screen, a horizontal line appears in the middle of the screen and half of the screen is normal whereas the other half is discolored and frozen. When I move my mouse to the bottom half it feels like it's slower there.

I have never dropped this laptop. I use it on a daily basis and it only started happening about last week.

@bho19982012,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • When was the last time the computer was working fine?
  • Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?
  • Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting?

While you respond to that, I recommend you update the BIOS and the graphics driver from the below link and check whether the issue is resolved.

BIOS: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp88501-89000/sp88780.exe

Nvidia Graphics: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp85001-85500/sp85045.exe

Intel Graphics: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp85001-85500/sp85428.exe

If you continue facing the issue, I recommend you boot to the BIOS by tapping the F10 key on startup and check whether the issue persists in BIOS.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!

Cheers!

Sorry for the late reply. My screen was working fine the last couple days without any flickering. But, the problem has returned.

Before I answer your questions about my screen, I want to make one thing clear: when I tilt the screen back just a little bit and hold it there, the screen itself returns back to normal. So I have a feeling the problem at hand has to do with the physical components. I connected the monitor to a second one and everything was fine.

This started happening around November 1st.

I have not made any changes.

As previously stated, I connected my laptop to a second monitor and everything was perfectly fine. I restarted my laptop, ran it through safe mode and nothing changed.
