I bought my laptop only few weeks ago. i see a small bright light(like half sun with sun rays) coming from under the screen from top mid edge during switching on phase of the device against the black background. The light dissapers when the laptop main screen appears. I have no other problem. just worried if it means something? Does it signify a problem for the device in future and do i nid to do something about it? Thank you!

@SUB002,

Good Day.  Thank you for taking an interest in the HP community. I understand that you require assistance regarding issues with flashes of light appearing during startup. I will be glad to assist you and let’s get right to it. Superb analysis and great observations made. It is amply appreciated.

Let me gather some information for better clarity to assist you correctly:

  • Is it a recent occurrence?
  • Did anything trigger it such as a power outage or surge?

I will be providing a roadmap with some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. Let us try these steps:

Perform a hard reset on the computer by following instructions from this link:: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768

Then check in bios if the flash of light appears. Follow these instructions to get to the bios:

  • Keep tapping the Esc key gently several times as soon as you power on the computer.
  • It takes you to the startup menu.
  • Then press the F10 key to go the bios.
  • Now check if the screen flashes here or you see any flashes of light.
  • Then press F9 load setup defaults and select yes and push “enter.”
  • Then press F10 to save changes and exit.

Once you are back in windows, update the bios from this link: http://hp.com/drivers and follow the onscreen instructions.

  • Once the bios is updated now check again by restarting the computer. If the flashes of light occur only during startup and the computer functions normally after this, there should be no cause for concern.
  • This could get triggered when powering on the computer when pushing the power button, the flashes of light could be due to the computer powering on.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂
