I have no idea what type of HP laptop this is because it doesn't appear to be written anywhere on the laptop. But the model is 15s-eq2015ni. I turned on the laptop to find the brightness control gone. When I click on the internet symbol or volume symbol in the bottom right, it's not displayed with the volume bar like it normally would be. F3 does not bring it up. It also does not appear in the display settings under 'Brightness and Colour.'
The brightness bar DOES appear under 'dynamic lighting' but it has no effect on the screen's brightness when I adjust the bar.
And, at the same time that this happened, the sound also became crackly.
I have to say, this laptop has given me regular glitches since I bought it and has literally cost me hours of work time. It does not function well.

Hi @si_9,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
I see that you are facing an issue with sound and display brightness on your Laptop.
Please follow the steps below to perform an audio test to confirm if the hardware is working fine.
1) Shut down the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F2 once.
4) click Component Tests > click Audio, and then click Run once.
If you hear any crackling sound from the internal speakers during performing the test, there is an issue with the speakers.
Kindly refer to the steps from the below link to troubleshoot speakers and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot display brightness and potentially resolve the issue:
Check Keyboard Shortcuts:
- Try using the function keys (usually F2 and F3) to adjust the brightness. You might need to hold down the "Fn" key while pressing them.
Update Display Drivers:
- Right-click on the Start menu and select "Device Manager."
- Expand the "Display adapters" section.
- Right-click on your graphics driver and select "Update driver." Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software."
Check Power Options:
- Go to "Control Panel" > "Hardware and Sound" > "Power Options."
- Click on "Change plan settings" for your current plan, then "Change advanced power settings." Look for "Display" and adjust the brightness settings.
Reinstall Display Drivers:
- In Device Manager, right-click on your display driver and select "Uninstall device." Restart your laptop; Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
Windows Settings:
- Go to "Settings" > "System" > "Display" and see if there are any brightness options there.
Windows Update:
- Install all the pending updates for the Windows operating system following the below steps.
go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the upgrade is available for your device and you want to proceed, download and install it.
BIOS Update:
- Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the BIOS and let me know if that fixes the issue.
Make sure you keep only the charger plugged in while updating the BIOS for your PC.
Click on the + sign next to BIOS and then download the file.
Open the file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!
