Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

Fairly new PC, ordered in May '25 and completed rebuilding from troubled PC in June. At first my camera worked fine and facial recognition was working. Suddenly it stopped. I tried a variety of troubleshooting steps and looking online for answers to problem but nothing worked. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @mvfriar,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  1. What is the exact HP PC model?
  2. Which version of Windows are you using (Windows 10 or 11)?
  3. When you say “suddenly it stopped,” did this happen after a Windows update, driver update, or software installation?
  4. Can you still access the camera for apps like Camera or Teams, or is it completely unresponsive?
  5. Are there any error messages or codes when trying to use facial recognition?

Troubleshooting steps to try

1. Check Windows Hello settings

  • Go to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Windows Hello Face
  • Make sure Face Recognition is set up and try re-registering your face.

2. Verify camera functionality

  • Open the Camera app in Windows to confirm the camera works.
  • If the camera doesn’t appear or shows an error, it may be a driver issue.

3. Update or reinstall camera drivers

  • Open Device Manager → Cameras → Your camera
  • Right-click → Update driver or Uninstall device, then restart to let Windows reinstall it.
  • Also check for updates via HP Support Assistant.

4. Check privacy settings

  • Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Camera
  • Make sure apps and Windows Hello are allowed to access the camera.

5. Run HP diagnostics

  • Use HP Support Assistant to run hardware diagnostics on the camera this can detect hardware or driver issues.

I hope this helps.
