No, connecting 2 HDMI out ports together won't work if not damage both devices. You can use USB external ODD and plug directly to USB port.

Dear BH, many thanks for your reply, sounds like you saved me from myself! As you can guess I am a beginner. My Blu Ray also has a USB type A out and my  Laptop has USB type A - I presume is 'in' from what you say. Should I try that? I cannot find an HDMI to USB type A cable. Also, my new HP Laptop Windows 11 has no DVD drivers installed, where do I get them from? Am I wasting my time trying to play DVDs through my HP Laptop. This will be my only entertainment for several months with no Wifi when I go exploring...

I still can't work out what are you trying to do. BUT external DVD/BlueRay players and computer normally work the following way

USB or USB-C (from computer)  ---- to USB or USB-C on external player

You can use software on your computer to play DVD or BD movies

Note: some software allow you transfer movies on DVD's or BD's to your computer too.

My new HP Laptop 15s-fq2xxx Windows 11 (USB type A 'in') does not have a DVD player built in, so I want to plug my Sony Blu Ray into it to play DVDs.  From what you say I need a cable that has HDMI on one end for my Sony player and a USB type A on the other to plug into my laptop. Then there should be a chance of my laptop detecting the Sony Blu Ray DVD player with the Leawo software I have downloaded. I cannot find a cable with HDMI one end and USB type A on the other end? Any suggestions where I can look.

So why? I have successfully ripped standard DVDs to my Toshiba  hard drive and played them on my HP laptop ok but I cannot rip blu rays and most of my movies are blu ray so it would be quicker and easier to take the Blu Ray player and BDiscs with me.

Moreover, I will not be able to stream movies where I am going because there is no Wifi and 'Roaming' is too expensive/data hungry. So, I want to take my movies with me.
