Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager

Once the Device Manger box opens expand the "Monitors" tab

Left Click and Uninstall the monitor listed.  Make sure to also check the box that says Delete Drivers.

Then select the Scan for Hardware Changes  in the device manager menu... Untitled.jpg

That is quite possibly a display driver problem. Look in device manager and see what is listed for display adapters. If it is Microsoft Basic, advanced features like brightness adjustment will not work until the right driver is loaded. And to tell you the right driver, we need model or product number for the laptop and OS version (Windows 7, 8, 10?).

HI

This worked for me try this

1. Open "Device Manager"
2. Under "Monitors" tree you will see installed monitor, PnP-Monitor (Standard) in my case
3. Right click in it, and select update driver
4. Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
5. Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
6. Keep "Show compatible hardware" checkbox on
7. Under driver list, you will see "Generic PnP Monitor"
8. Select that option and Click "Next"

Hope this helps.

Hi, the easiest way to do this is using the Windows search engine (Cortana) by typing brightness and it will show  you the shortcut to the settings screen.

I forgot to mention, this computer was handed down to me and is running Linux - Mint 17.3 XFCE.  For the volume I simply press the Fn key + eutger F9 or F10.  I was trying to press Fn key + F2 or F3 but nothing happens.

Thanks

Could you provide the product number of the PC?

Hope this helps.

That was fairly significant information but the answer I gave is going to be closest to the truth. Likely you have a generic vesa display driver in Linux and you are going to need to have a driver that is specific to your video chip. So we still need the exact model number of your laptop to see what graphics chip is in use so we can see if there is a proprietary Linux driver you can install.
