When I switched on my HP Envy x360 Convertible this morning, it automatically did an update of the BIOS. (I had never seen it do that before). I had an external monitor connected to the laptop. It now will not detect the external monitor. This is a very poor laptop - the fan is unbearably noisy; I cannot use right-click on the mouse. Now it will not detect the external monitor. I will not buy another HP laptop.

I reviewed your post and I understand that the external monitor is not getting detected after a BIOS update.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
What is the product number of your computer?
Meanwhile, I recommend you update the display driver from the below link and check if it helps.
https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers
For the fan noise, I recommend you follow the steps in the below article.
https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01007591
For the touchpad issue, I recommend you uninstall the touchpad driver from the device manager and then download and install the driver from the below link.
https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers
Here is how it is done.
- Type "Device Manager" into the search field to open the device manager console.
- Expand the node that represents the type of device that you want to uninstall, right-click the device entry, and click Uninstall.
- On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK to start the uninstall process.
- When the uninstall process is complete, remove the device.
NOTE: On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click the Delete the driver software for this device option to delete the driver package that was used for the device.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

I had the exact same problem after an automatic BIOS update on my HP laptop.
Today I installed the previous version of BIOS and my external monitors are working correctly again.
I followed the instructions from here:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00042629
Specifically the directions under "Update the BIOS manually from within Windows".
Under step 3, I took care to download the BIOS version prior to the latest one.
Everything happened largely as described (and reasonably automatically), the only extra step was that when the BIOS update starts, I had to confirm that I wanted to install an old BIOS version.
I hope that helps. It was very annoying to not be able to use the external monitors. The fix took about 5 minutes to implement, but I wasted a lot of time searching for a solution.
