Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

An HP Envy, model 17T-bw000

Change your mouse settings -> Additional mouse settings does not work (it used to, no longer though).

The problem is there is no Synaptics tabs / Touchpad tabs available to click on.

And I've gone through updating the Synaptics driver, to no avail.

I have also de-installed the Synaptics driver, unfortunately it is like a vampire, it keeps coming back.

Wow, sure is frustrating -- HP, how about a hot key to turn off the touchpad????????

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

  1. Open Device Manager, click Start > Control Panel > Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Double-click on your synaptic device.
  4. Select the Driver tab.
  5. Click Roll Back Driver to restore.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Echo_Lake,

  1. Open Device Manager, click Start > Control Panel > Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Double-click on your synaptic device -- DOES NOT EXIST!!!

I was going nuts trying to see the "synaptics" tab on the mouse control settings, never could get it to show up, so I simply deleted the driver.

Anyway, under "Mouse and other pointing devices" I have:

  • HID-compliant mouse
  • HID-compliant mouse (yes, it repeats)
  • PS/2 Compatible Mouse

And that is it.

Thank you for posting back.

Based on the information that you've provided, it seems that the touchpad driver is not yet installed.

If you haven't tried manually downloading and installing the touchpad driver, let's try this: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-envy-17-bw0000-laptop-pc/20283127/mode...

The status so far:

1. it was not possible to turn off the touch pad via a "snyaptics" tab on the mouse settings

2. So I de-install the driver, that worked temporarily

3. After (presumably) a Windows update, the touchpad is turned on again

4. Now I have to REINSTALL the Synaptics driver and then ROLL IT BACK -- all TO JUST TURN THE BLASTED THING OFF

A hot key to turn off the touchpad, a GUI interface via a setting to turn off the touchpad, ...  Nope, keep uninstalling, installing, rolling back, uninstall, install, install, uninstall, rollback -- that's how to to turn of the touchpad.  Scotch tap on an index card would be easier than this.

Echo_Lake,

You pointed me in the right directions, thanks.

An agonizing process, but here is what worked for me:

  • Via device manager make sure that Mice and other pointing devices -> Synaptics SMBus ClickPad is uninstalled AND the box is checked to uninstall the software
  • reboot
  • download and install:  Synaptics TouchPad Driver Windows 10 v1709 - sp86860.exe
  • Then you can disable the click pad via:  Change your mouse settings -> Additional mouse options -> ClickPad Settings (now it appears) -> ClickPad Disable.  Previously the "ClickPad Settings" tab simply did not appear.

In short, Synaptics TouchPad Driver Windows 10 v1809 - sp92861.exe is based on my experience A BAD DRIVER, HP should remove that from its download list and Synaptics should be made award it is faulty.  The latest driver results in the ClicPad Settings tab not appearing when Additional mouse options is selected.
