Chiral scrolling disabled in TouchPad driver update

Pavilion 15-bc010nd
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Ever since the Synaptics SMBus TouchPad driver was updated to version 19.5.10.75, the feature of one-finger, circular scrolling has disappeared and only the two-finger scrolling is available.

I find this a huge setback in the user-friendliness of the touchpad.

Is there a way to re-enable chiral scrolling or will it become available again in future versions?

Chiral scrolling disabled in TouchPad driver update

@Hugo21

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,  I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, perform Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8.

Next step, BIOS default:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer. Once it's done uninstall the Touchpad device,

Next, uninstall Touchpad device from device manager.

  1. Press Windows+X to open the menu, and choose Device Manager on it.
  2. In the device manager, expand category "Mice and other pointing devices".
  3. Under this category, right-click on your Synaptics Touchpad driver and click on Uninstall.
  4. You may be required to confirm the uninstallation. Check the box next to "Delete the driver software for this device" and click OK button.
  5. Restart your PC for the change to take effect. After restarting. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
  6. Do not perform any manual upgrades to the driver until it does automatically

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Chiral scrolling disabled in TouchPad driver update

I've performed the Hard Reset and BIOS default, and reinstalled the TouchPad according to the instructions. Still there is no way to tweak the touch settings in a dedicated ClickPad Settings tab like there used to be (see image inserted), except for the sensitivity through the default Touchpad Settings by Windows.

There is a specific instruction page dedicated to the functionalities it used to have:

https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04648748

-> Scrolling using a TouchPad or ClickPad -> Adjust single-finger scrolling

In the troubleshooting tab of the page mentioned above, an advice is given to download the appropriate driver from the Software and Driver Downloads page. However, for my laptop model, 15-bc010nd, the older driver (Synaptics TouchPad Driver 19.3.31.31 Rev.A) gives an error upon installation.

The newer driver (Synaptics TouchPad Driver (Windows 10 v1803 19.5.10.75 Rev.C) is the earlier version of my current driver (19.5.35.47) which coincided with the disappearing of the ClickPad Settings.

I hope there is anyone who has found a way to work around this or maybe has some other software to enhance Touchpad handling.

As you can see below, there is a dedicated folder for chiral scrolling in the Registry editor, suggesting that it should be able to turn it on somehow.

Sadly a rollback didn't get me any further.

What I noticed after re-installing the earlier version and then the newest version is that Windows is trying to download the Synaptics TouchPad Control Panel from the Microsoft Store.

However, it seems to be a widespread problem that this app gives an error upon attempting to install it.

Chiral scrolling disabled in TouchPad driver update

@Hugo21

Thank you for posting back.

The last thing I can suggest trying is a restore back to the factory. Performing an HP system recovery (Windows ) While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance.
They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for the reply @Echo_Lake . I'd rather not do a System Recovery.

A few months ago I had the same problem. At that time I was still able to roll back the driver and have access to the old Control Panel. At this point however, a rollback isn't allowed by Windows anymore. If I perform a System Recovery, the same will occur once updates are reinstalled and an isolated rollback for the TouchPad driver will be impossible.

I saw in the screenshot in the post below that someone has indeed been able to install the actual Synaptics Touchpad Control Panel. I'm hoping they're able to shed more light on the matter.
