Hello

I was using my laptop and the screen went out all of a sudden. I can only see what I'm doing on the computer if I pointed the screen directly at a light source which isn't ideal.

I was able to press the sensor for the lid closing (don't know what its called, but its a button that gets pressed when the screen closes and its supposed to turn the screen off; its to the right of the power button on my laptop)  and the screen would display for a few seconds. But after a few days that stopped working but I'm still able to use an external monitor.

Before this happened I realized that the screen had developed an orange tint to it.

The main thing I'm wondering is what is broken? Is it a back-light or an inverter? And would I be able to fix/replace it? The reason I'm bothering to ask this is because this laptop has sentimental value and I sill use it as a secondary computer despite its age.

@Vermilion

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • When was the last time it worked without these issues?
  • Have you updated Graphics and Chipset drivers?
  • Have you checked the display on an external monitor?

let’s try these steps to resolve the problem:

I recommend you attempt to access the BIOS screen by tapping on F10 while the computer is restarting,

If the issue persists in the BIOS screen which is outside windows, it would confirm a hardware failure.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Its not software related, its hardware related. Screen worked fine without this issue a few years ago

Works fine on external monitor was just wondering what would need replacing. Would it be an inverter?

@Vermilion

Thank you for posting back.

This sounds like hardware related issue with the computer display, as we have limited support boundaries in the support community as of now.

I would request you to reach out to our Support and our Support Engineers should be able to check the available service options in order to diagnose the computer physically. HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:  www.hp.com/contacthp/
