I bought my new HP ENVY 13 laptop last week and wanted to connect it to my monitor - the HP Pavilion 22xi.
I bought a USB Type C to HDMI adapter and used this to connect an HDMI cable from my laptop to the computer.
However, nothing happened, repeatedly - tried restarting the computer and turning off the monitor, unplugging, trying a different USB C port and trying to detect a display but nothing worked.
I used the adapter with my macbook's USB C port and it worked perfectly.
So what's the issue with my laptop that it can't connect to my HDMI monitor? This feels like a pretty basic thing.

Hi, I also have this problem, but the answer will dissapoint you.
It simply won't work because this laptop doesn't support it, I have been trying to make it work for myself the last week. I already made a thread here on the forum, USB-C Alternate mode not avialable , and the conclusion is that the ENVY 13-ad000-series only supports data transfer for all of the USB-A and -C ports. Your last option is probably to get a DisplayLink adapter that works over USB, I have ordered one myself (Dell DA100) and will test it on monday.

Hey,
thanks so much for getting back to me - glad to see I'm not alone here!
when you test the Dell USB-A adapter could you possibly let me know how it goes? It would be so helpful!
Also...
Here the envy range is advertised as being able to connect to external displays using the USB C ports.
So I don't understand what we're missing.
The monitors it's shown as being connected to have 2 HDMI's and a Display Port 1.2
This makes me wonder if a USB C to Display Port 1.2 adapter/cable would work?
and then maybe add another adapter on top of that to finally get it to HDMI haha...
Just a guess.

Hi again.
I will tell you how well the DisplayLink adapter works on monday. I already have a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter but it doesn't work because HP hasn't implemented the USB-C DisplayPort Alternate mode (allows DP, HDMI, VGA support on the USB-C). This is on a hardware level as far as I know, so there isn't any fix for it, and HP has only implemented this on laptops with Thunderbolt. HP are simply wrong in their advertising of this product (I wouldn't say I'm shocked at this point).

Hi,
I have HP Pavilion Power - 15-cb005nc model - and the same issue with USB-C.
Also using it for my external display ASUS ZenScreen, also the same problems.....
Nevertheless - originally it WORKS, display connect to USB-C shows input as "DisplayPort" and show picture.
But:
- first time it works about 2 hours, then sudenly goes off, USB-C is like dead (yes, USB-A with adapter works fine and diplay shows picture on its input "USB"
- I call HP support (CZE) and after updating drivers for both NVIDIA and Intel Graphics (probably the Intel was the right ones) it again works perfectly for many many days....
- Yesterday fw packet udated via HP Support Assistant offer to update BIOS and some other drivers, (I think the Intel Graphiics as well), I have updated it and - after few minutes it STOP showing picture at USB-C again!!!
I called again for support, try to install earlier version of the Intel drivers, but nothing happen - USB-C behaves as dead :(((
Installation of earlier BIOS do not want to proceed.... and renewing the NVIDIA and Intel graphics do not do nothing, USB-C is still dead.
So - it is clear isuue of the DRIVERS !!!!
Have nice days with usb-A,
Jiri
