I am trying to connect my HP ENVY x360 to an ASUS VA24DCP monitor by connecting a USB-C cable directly from the laptop to the USB-C port on the monitor. However I am not able to display anything on the monitor.  Is the ASUS VA24DCP compatible with my laptop or do I need a docking station?

Yes, you would need a docking station to connect your laptop. As the USB-C is only for Transfer data.
