OMEN by HP 15-dc1040nr

I picked up a viewsonic VG1655 portable monitor a little over a year ago for when I'm working on the road, since I find it a bit of a pain going to one monitor after using two for so long, and my job demands I have a lot of windows open to monitor databases etc.

When I used it before I was able to connect with just a USB C cable, and if I recall it was a USB A to USB C cable, this was great because I could even connect a 3rd monitor if I wanted with the HDMI port or the USB C port in the back of the laptop.

The specs say it has USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C™ with Thunderbolt™ 3 (40 Gb/s signaling rate, DisplayPort™ 1.2, HP Sleep and Charge) so I'd think that was sufficient to use the monitor with one cable.

However I just brought it along on another road trip, and this time I can only get it to work with a USB C and a HDMI to mini HDMI cable, so it's getting power through the USB C cable and video through the HDMI cable.

I was wondering if this laptop doesn't have enough power in the USB ports, but why was I able to get it working before?

I have tried both USB C to USB C and USB A to USB C cables, and neither work on their own. Could it be I used a different cable when it worked?  In theory I should be able to run 2 USB C cables to the monitors 2 C ports, one for power & one for video, but it only works if I use the mini HDMI port on it now.

Anyone else use these portable monitors with their laptops and experience this?

thanks in advance..
