HP 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cp0000 (2Q7W8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

OS: Windows 11 Home in S mode, Product Name: HP Laptop 17-cp0xxx, HDMI port works fine with one single HDMI cable to the monitor. Unable to add the 3rd (or 2nd external) monitor, no matter the connection or cable?

I tried multiple adapter types from pnp hdmi to usb-c to a triplite docking station and all were unsuccessful.

My successful solution:

Leave S-Mode

Hesitated at first, because I felt at ease with it. While security is high on my priority list, it was a minimal risk option to fix a simple driver issue.

Thanks for your support!

Hi @SFCH2015,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand how frustrating it must be to encounter limitations when trying to extend your workspace, especially when connecting additional monitors is crucial for productivity. Let’s work through this together to find a solution.

  • Have you tried using any docking station or USB-to-HDMI adapters to connect the third monitor?
  • Are the monitors detected in Settings > Display, or do they remain undetected?
  • Are you looking to extend the display across all screens, or is one meant to duplicate another?

Check Display Configuration Limits:

  • Your laptop's GPU or HDMI port may only support one external monitor. Check your laptop's specifications on the HP website to confirm if it supports multiple external monitors.
  • Some laptops require a dock or splitter for more than one external display.

Use a Multi-Monitor Docking Station:

  • If the HDMI port supports only one monitor, consider using a USB-C docking station or a hub that supports multiple display outputs. Ensure the docking station is compatible with Windows 11.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Open Device Manager (press Windows + X and select it).
  • Expand Display Adapters.
  • Right-click on your GPU (e.g., AMD Radeon or Intel UHD) and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  • Alternatively, download the latest drivers from HP's support page or the GPU manufacturer’s website.

Configure Display Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display.
  • Scroll down to Multiple Displays and click Detect.
  • If the third monitor doesn’t appear, click Advanced display settings and ensure the monitors are recognized by the system.

Test with a USB-to-HDMI Adapter:

  • If your laptop lacks enough built-in ports for multiple monitors, use a USB-to-HDMI adapter or DisplayLink adapter.
  • Install the necessary drivers for the adapter to enable the third monitor.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, I recommend you contact phone support for more options.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
