Hi,

I first bought my laptop in August 2017.  Almost immediately, I noticed my cursor would intermittently freeze.  Almost 2 years later, and still behaves the same way.  Sometimes it unlocks quickly, sometimes it doesn't.  If I put the laptop into sleep mode and then wake it up, it will unlock... then a few moments later, it may begin to freeze up again.  It's strange because sometimes a few days will go by without it locking up, while in other moments it will lock up non-stop.

I've searched the forum, but I haven't seen any definitive answer.  Right before I began to write this I updated my Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 display adapter... but it stills freezes.  Has anyone had any luck with overcoming this problem?

@andrewtkelly that is an interesting thread, lots to read and going by what you've mentioned, if it indeed is the adapter and not a hardware issue, I've looked into the details and there's an advisory to fix this issue, here's what I recommend:

Update the BIOS to resolve the issue. Click the appropriate link below to view Software and Driver Downloads for your computer. Expand the BIOS section, then click Details under HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) for installation instructions.

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.

@andrewtkelly I'm surprised you waited for 2yrs before you brought this to us, nevertheless, it's never too late, that said, let's perform a hardware test to ensure there are no hardware malfunctions causing this issue:

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  • Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  • On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
  • Click Extensive Test.
  • Click Run once, or Loop until error.
  • While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component display on the screen.

If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you respond back to us.

P.S: Welcome to HP Forums! 😉

Keep us posted,

Hi, @Riddle-Decipher.  Thanks for reaching out.  I performed the Extensive System Test as you requested.  Everything passed!

Yes, I've lived with this issue for a while.  I guess it was just manageable enough to live with.  I use my laptop for business, so the thought of shipping it away somewhere never appealed to me.  Also, I've read other posts in this forum of users with the same issue but no successful fix.  I saw a particularly interesting post here:  https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Intermittent-screen-freeze-on-HP-Spec... , where two users, @Efbasham and @Wastian, really discuss it in depth.  The ongoing hypothesis is that it's a display adapter issue, and not necessarily a hardware issue.  However, I just updated the adapters yesterday and it's still happening.

Hi @Riddle_Decipher, both of the links you provided both ultimately lead to the same file.  I tried downloading both, starting with the update for the HP Spectre 15-df0000 x360 Convertible PC, but it says "This BIOS update is not compatible with this device."

I did a search by serial number and found the correct file.  I just re-installed the BIOS... I was running a 2017 version.  Now we wait and see!

It's been 2 days and no cursor freezing so far.  So awesome.  Everything is running smoothly.

My BIOS had never been updated --I was running a 4.12.2017 version of it.  I then upgraded to the 11.12.2018 version.

Thank you!  Problem marked as solved.

@andrewtkelly That's awesome!

I'm glad it worked out, and if you need anything else, feel free to get back to us, anytime.

Take care now, and have a good day, ahead.
