Pavilion
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP Pavilion laptop and for the last month, I have been periodically dealing with the cursor disappearing. Meaning, I cannot use the touch pad to control the cursor, and no cursor will appear on the screen. I have tried all of the normal troubleshooting tips, like pressing Ctrl to see where the cursor is located (doesn't work), going through the mouse settings, and anything else I have seen listed. The only thing that works is restarting my computer (even when it doesn't need an update), and this only works on like the 9th restart, and even then only sometimes. Sometimes I can't get it to come back for days. What am I doing wrong?

Hi @SamS14 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with a disappearing cursor on your HP Pavilion laptop. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

  • Update Touchpad Drivers: Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause the cursor to disappear. Go to Device Manager, expand "Mice and other pointing devices," right-click your touchpad, and select "Update driver."
  • Check Touchpad Settings: Ensure that your touchpad is enabled. You can often toggle the touchpad on/off using the Fn key along with a function key (usually F6, F7, or F9) that has a touchpad icon.
  • Disable and Re-enable the Touchpad: In Device Manager, disable the touchpad and then enable it again. This can sometimes reset the functionality.
  • Check for Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows is up to date, as updates can include fixes for hardware issues.
  • Use an External Mouse: If you have an external mouse available, try using it to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is with the touchpad itself.
  • Run a Virus Scan: Malware can cause unexpected behavior, so running a full system scan with your antivirus software may help.
  • Adjust Touchpad Sensitivity: If the cursor seems unresponsive, adjusting the touchpad sensitivity settings in the mouse settings might resolve the issue.
  • Perform a Clean Boot: This can help identify if any background services or applications are causing the issue. You can find instructions on how to perform a clean boot on Microsoft's support page.
  • Restore to an Earlier Point: If this issue started recently, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a previous state when the cursor was functioning properly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
