Compaq Presario CQ40-330TU
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

My compaq presario CQ40 notebook pc resolution is decreased. And the max. resolution has set lower than original so the display is not on the whole screen and there is a black strip on the right vertically.

Yet display is complete but smaller than original. I have tried reinstalling graphics driver but no improvement.

Please help what may be the problem. Can damaged display cable be a reason?

Welcome to the HP Forums,

We'll be with you until it's all sorted & beyond!

Could you attach a screenshot of your display for a better understanding of the issue?

Meanwhile, here's what you could do,

Try with an alternate/external monitor to check if you have the same issues with the display,

  • If the alternate monitor works fine whereas the laptop continues to have issues, this could be a hardware LCD malfunction,
  • However, if the monitor doesn't work either, you may want to reinstall the graphics card drivers and update the same along with BIOS updates: Click here to find & install the same.

Let me know how that pans out,

Hey Riddle,

Thanks for your reply.

I tried by connecting other display screen but the same problem was there. I just want to say that display is not filling up the screen. I am attaching some screenshots. Please have a look at them. Even when I enter the BIOS, there also the same problem.

I also installed latest version of HP Support Assistant and checked for any updates. But there was nothing.

Please help me out.

Thank you for replying with this detailed response,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I suggest you reinstall the graphics card drivers from the device manager, then update the BIOS using this link: Click here and if that doesn't work, this is a possible hardware defect, please refer to my private message to have the device repaired:
