I have a Pavilion dv6 with hdmi output.

I used to be able to play movies on my tv through my laptop using an hdmi cable but now it doesn't work.

The tv recognises that something is plugged into the hdmi port but shows a black bland screen.

My laptop shows under Sound that the Sony tv is not plugged in but it actually is.

I have tried different cables and different ports on my tv.

Any suggestions?

If it worked before and it suddenly stopped working, then it may be helped with a simple Power Reset on the notebook side:

Notebooks- Power Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues- Sealed Non-Removable Battery

OR

Notebooks - Power Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues - Removable Battery

Why a Power Reset works to fix some issues:

The Power Reset does not install anything on your computer, it does not remove anything from your computer, and the Reset does not "change" anything on your computer.  Your data and programs remain as they were before the reset was applied.

Why a Power Reset might Not Work:

If the issue is more than just entanglement, if the "good instructions" on the computer are not good enough -- that is, you need an update, a new driver, or there is a problem that cannot be "untangled", then the Reset will not work.

If there is a hardware problem the Power Reset will not work.

HP Notebook PCs - Resolving HDMI Display and Sound Issues

Remember to pay attention to Order of Events:

  • Shut down the computer. Turn off the monitor or TV.
  • Connect an HDMI cable to the computer and to the display.
  • Turn on the display, and select the HDMI input as the input source to view.
  • Turn on the computer.

Good Luck!

Good Morning unknownperson,

Thank you for your reply.

I understand that your TV is telling you that you have an unsupported signal type.

Here is a link to Connecting a Monitor, Projector or TV (Windows 😎.

Are  you trying to use it as a TV or an additional monitor?

Have you tried a different cable?

Have you checked the resolution and does your TV support that resolution?

If this has not helped, please tell me how you have it connected.

Are you usings adapters?

What port are you connecting it to on the notebook.

Have you checked the user guide for the TV for additional help?

HP manufactures many models of DV 6, would you provide your exact model.  There is a ink in my original post to assist you with that.

Good Luck.

Hi unknownperson,

I regret that you still have the issue!

Have you run the HP Support Assistant to check for HP updates?

If you check Device Manager do you see any marks on any devices?

To find out which one is causing the problem, if you connect your TV to another PC does it work?

If you connect another monitor or TV to the HDMI port on the notebook does it work?

If it is the notebook, I suggest contacting HP support for assistance. They can remotely connect to your computer to  easily look for issues and help with resolutions.

Hi,

I am using HP Pavillion DV4 Notebook PC. running Windows 10.

when I connect my PC to my Sony Bravia, if I select "duplicate display" I can play video and stuff. if I select separate display, then it doesn't do anything. just says "No Signal".

even if they don't support the same resolution, why should I not be able to  display anything i want to display, I don't seek they have the same resolution.

can HP come up with some solutions to resolve this issue as the hardware manufacturer ?

Thank you
