I purchased my 17" laptop on 06/05/2025 and the monitor got dim, despite the max brightness setting and adaptive brightness settings being off. I reset power options to default (HP recommended) as well. I only noticed it a few days ago, so it was working fine before.

@kpfran, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
I understand your HP 17" laptop screen appears dim even though brightness is set to maximum and adaptive brightness is turned off. Since this issue started recently and you've already reset power settings, let's walk through a few more steps to isolate and resolve the issue.
Check Graphics Driver
Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause brightness issues.
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics driver (e.g., Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA) and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Alternatively, use HP Support Assistant to automatically detect and install the latest drivers.
Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
This tool can detect hardware-related display issues.
- Download and run the tool from here: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support
- Select Component Tests > Display and follow the on-screen instructions.
Check Night Light and HDR Settings
Sometimes, Night Light or HDR settings can make the screen appear dim.
- Go to Settings > System > Display.
- Turn Night Light off if it's enabled.
- Scroll down and check if HDR is on. If so, try turning it off to see if brightness improves.
BIOS Update
An outdated BIOS can sometimes cause display anomalies.
- Open HP Support Assistant or visit HP Software and Driver Downloads.
- Enter your laptop model and check for BIOS updates.
Perform a Hard Reset
This can clear temporary settings that might be affecting the display.
- Shut down the laptop.
- Unplug the power adapter.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the power and turn the laptop back on.
I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.
Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
