Pavillion laptop 15-cc055od
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Purchased my Pavillion laptop 15-cc055od in 2017. Is there any way to disable the Windows button? I keep getting an emoji window popping up, apparently when I inadvertently hit the Windows button and the period button at the same time.  I cannot disable it in Settings.  I don't use emojis and the only way to get rid of it is to use the escape button.  Any hacks? Or is there an easier way to make the emoji window go away without going over to the escape button?

Hi @Ty11

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with disabling the hot keys.

To disable hotkeys in Windows 10, you may follow the steps below:

1) Type gpedit in the Search and then click Edit group policy. (This will open Local Group Policy Editor).

2) Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer. In the right-side pane, look for Turn off Windows + X hotkeys and double click on it.

4) Check Disabled and click OK.

5) Restart the computer to make the settings take effect.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Asmita, but that does not work. There is no gpedit or gpedit.msc in the Command Prompt. If I search the computer for it in the file manager, I come up with several gpedit files.

Look for "Edit Group Policy".

When I search for Edit Group Policy in Windows Explorer it takes forever and comes up with so many different files not even with that name - I guess it must have it in the content. But when I search for name:=Group Edit Policy I do not get any results.

We could try making some changes in the Registry and check if that helps

Note: Changing Registry values is usually not advisable to be done by amateurs because it can damage the Windows files, making the OS unstable

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then click OK.
  2. On the Windows menu, click HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE on Local Machine.
  3. Double-click the System\CurrentControlSet\Control folder, and then click the Keyboard Layout folder.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, type in Scancode Map, click REG_BINARY as the Data Type, and then click OK.
  5. Type 00000000000000000300000000005BE000005CE000000000 in the Data field, and then click OK.
  6. Close Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Thank you

I am just going to forget the whole thing because I don't want to destabilize the OS, but thank you for all of your support.
