Hi @Jhsealy,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If you'd like to disable the function keys (F1–F12) on your HP Notebook PC so they act as standard function keys (instead of controlling brightness, volume, etc.), you can do this through the BIOS or sometimes via keyboard shortcuts, depending on your model.

Here’s how to do it:

Method 1: Change Function Key Behavior in BIOS

  1. Restart your laptop and press the Esc key repeatedly as it boots.
  2. When the Startup Menu appears, press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  3. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the System Configuration tab.
  4. Find Action Keys Mode:
    • If it’s enabled, the function keys perform special actions (like volume).
    • If it’s Disabled, they act as standard F1–F12 keys.
  5. Change the setting to Disabled.
  6. Press F10 to save and exit.

Your function keys will now behave like traditional F1–F12 keys unless you hold down the Fn key.

Method 2: Use HP Keyboard Shortcuts (if supported)

Some HP laptops allow toggling function key behavior using:

  • Fn + Esc. This may toggle the function key mode directly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
