The connected laptop display suddenly stopped working. I can connect to an external monitor and everything works. The LCD screen flickers a lot, and goes completely black. I have to restart it a few times to be able to some portion of the screen, but slowly it fades to black.

When the laptop display fails like this, it can be a screen issue or a video chip issue or both. The fact that an external monitor works OK rules out the video chip issue -- so your screen is failing and would need to be replaced.
We are not able, or permitted, to provide any repair estimates or equipment prices.
For this information, you would need to contact an HP Repair or Service Center.
