Hi @emarc119,

Thank you for the response.

I understand your HP Laptop 17 cp0xxx shows a “Display connection might be limited” message when connecting a docking station through the USB-C port. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

a. Check USB-C Port Capability
Not all USB-C ports support video output.
Confirm if your laptop's USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or video output by checking the symbol next to the port (a display or DP icon).
If it only supports data and charging, external displays won’t work through that port.

b. Inspect Docking Station and Cable
Ensure you are using a docking station that supports video output and is compatible with your laptop.
Check the USB-C cable for any physical damage. Try using a different USB-C cable that supports video and data transfer (USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 or above).

c. Update Graphics Drivers
Open Device Manager → Display adapters.
Right-click your graphics drivers (Intel/AMD/NVIDIA) and select “Update driver.”
Also update the docking station firmware if available from the manufacturer.

d. Check Display Settings
Go to Settings → System → Display → Detect to manually search for external monitors.
Ensure projection mode is set correctly (Windows + P → Extend/Duplicate).

e. Power Supply to Docking Station
If the docking station uses external power, make sure the power adapter is connected.
Some docks limit display output if running only on USB-C power from the laptop.

f. Test with Another Monitor or Dock
Connect a different monitor or try another docking station (if available) to see if the issue persists.
This helps isolate whether the issue is with the dock, monitor, or USB-C port.

g. Restart Devices
Disconnect the dock, shut down the laptop, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect the dock and restart the laptop.
Sometimes a power cycle refreshes the display connection.

h. If USB-C Does Not Support Display Output
Use alternative display options such as HDMI or DisplayPort available on the laptop (if present).
Or use a USB-C to HDMI adapter only if the USB-C port supports video output.

I hope this helps.

I've tried all these things. I have two other HP laptops and both work with the HP docking station. They also have to same ctype port with same markings.

Hi @emarc119,

Thank you for your update! I understand that even after trying all the previous steps, your HP Laptop 17 cp0xxx still shows “Display connection might be limited,” while the same docking station works with your other HP laptops. Let’s try some additional steps specific to this scenario:

a. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings
 - Restart the laptop and press Esc → F10 to enter BIOS/UEFI.
 - Go to Advanced → Built-in Device Options or USB Configuration.
 - Ensure USB-C / Thunderbolt / DisplayPort over USB-C is enabled.
 - Save and exit BIOS.

b. Update System Firmware & Chipset Drivers
 - Visit HP Support → Drivers & Software → enter your laptop model.
 - Install the latest BIOS update, chipset drivers, and Intel/AMD graphics drivers.
 - Restart the laptop after updates.

c. Reset Display Configuration
 - Disconnect the dock.
 - Open Device Manager → Display Adapters → uninstall the graphics driver (do not delete driver software).
 - Restart the laptop; Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
 - Reconnect the docking station and test again.

d. Test Without Docking Station
 - Connect the monitor directly to the USB-C port (or HDMI/DP if available) to confirm the port can output video.
 - If direct connection works, the issue may be with the laptop’s interaction with the dock firmware.

e. Power Settings
 - Go to Settings → System → Power & Battery → Additional power settings.
 - Set the laptop to Balanced or High Performance, and ensure USB selective suspend is disabled under Change advanced power settings → USB settings.

f. Check for Conflicting Software
 - Some USB or display management software can interfere.
 - Temporarily disable HP Thunderbolt / USB-C software, Intel Graphics Command Center, or similar utilities, then try reconnecting the dock.

I hope this helps.
