HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-d5000 (4V9Y1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

For some weird reason, the display depth color gets fixed on "6-bit" after installing HP or Intel Iris Xe drivers:

Whereas the "Basic Display Adapter" default driver from Microsoft correctly uses the "8-bit" color depth:

There isn't any "color depth" setting in the control panel that can be changed from 6-bit to 8-bit, and a 6-bit color mode in 2023 is totally unacceptable. Gradients look horribly broken.

So how can I fix this?

Hi @Milincho,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your display is stuck on "6-bit" depth color after installing Windows 11 drivers, there are a few steps you can take to try to resolve the issue.

  • Update your graphics drivers: Check if there are any updated graphics drivers available for your computer's graphics card. You can usually find them on the manufacturer's website. Download and install the latest drivers and see if the issue is resolved.
  • Check your display settings: Right-click on the desktop and select "Display settings." Under the "Advanced display settings" section, check if the color depth is set to 8-bit or higher. If it is set to 6-bit, try changing it to 8-bit or higher and see if the issue is resolved.
  • Check your monitor settings: Check if your monitor has any settings related to color depth. Some monitors allow you to adjust the color depth manually. If your monitor has such a setting, try adjusting it to 8-bit or higher and see if the issue is resolved.
  • Check your cables: Make sure your display cables are properly connected and not damaged. Try using a different cable or port and see if the issue is resolved.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

1. GPU drivers are updated. Tried both the latest driver available at the HP web site for this PC 15-D5000 ( European HP 15S-FQ5085NS ) laptop model (30.0.101.1660 03/18/2022), AND with the latest beta drivers (31.0.101.4335 - 04/21/2023) available from Intel's web site for the GPU model (Iris Xe).

2. As already stated: there is NO OPTION anywhere to change to anything else than 6-bit.

3. This is the laptop display, no external monitor. Again, there isn't any place to change from 6-bit to anything else.

4. There isn't any "cable" or "port" to "check". If you would have really read the message I posted, instead of answering with an automatic "copypaste", you should know that I am talking ABOUT A LAPTOP.
