Pavilion 14-cexxxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I use a StarTech dual monitor docking station (connected to two laptops so that I can hot-swap). The StarTech uses the universal DisplayLink graphics driver to achieve this and it works fine with my HP Spectre x360 and with a Dell Vostro.

However, I just purchased a HP Pavilion 14-cexxx notebook with the latest core i7 processor and the docking station will not work with it. It will display two screen OK but it constantly freezes (every couple of seconds!) and will not run ANY graphics based software. Anyone else having this problem?

I reported it to StarTech & DisplayLink themselves, both of whom have been great! After weeks of effort DisplayLink have REPLICATED the problem, IDENTIFIED the cause and have a SOLUTION! The problem is the version of the Intel Iris Graphics installed by HP. This clashes with the DisplayLink driver.DisplayLink says that the latest driver from Intel works fine, and even gave me a link to it.

Now to the real problem. The version of the driver installed by HP is a custom version and the latest update won't install over it. HP's ever-attentive approach to security seems to lock this version down, preventing its update. I tried HP support but they say they they cannot allow an update before the new version is tested but that there are no plans currently to replace the driver.

SO I'M STUCK! I know what the PROBLEM is and, unusually, I know what the SOLUTION is, but I cannot successfully apply it. Has anyone else encountered this and, if so, have you managed to solve it? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Update to the Post, below. the problem has been SOLVED! However, not by HP. Into my third month now with HP support and still nothing, so I force-installed an update to the Intel Iris Graphics driver and EVERYTHING WORKS PERFECTLY! I installed the new drivers, tested the laptop thoroughly in stand-alone mode, then switched over to dual monitor mode. Everything is working perfectly! I have been using it intensively with heavy graphics programs and there are no problems whatsoever: no lags, no freezes, no hiccups! It just works. ... and NO CONFLICT PROBLEMS with other drivers.

I really don't know what they delay has been in HP not addressing this problem when the cause was so obviously identified - by a supplier who has no responsibility for the problem. Come on HP, show a little concern for your small business computer users.

SO, if YOU are having this problem with duals displays also, go to the following link on the Intel website:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005474/graphics-drivers.html

It relates to Windows 7 but is still relevant for Windows 10. It shows you how to bypass the block HP has on the driver update and manually update the driver. Good luck!
