Hp Envy 13t ah000 CTO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Does any Hp Envy 13t actually have the capability of connecting to a displayport display over usbc? I have an Hp Envy (2018) 13t ah000 CTO, and  have been searching through these forums trying to find a definitive answer and cannot find one. It clearly states in the specifications of this laptop:

"1 USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (Data Transfer up to 5 Gb/s, DP1.2, HP Sleep and Charge); 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (1 HP Sleep and Charge)"

but there has been no indication that anyone in these forums has had success connecting a usbc to displayport dongle to the laptop and getting it to project onto an external display. Before dishing out money for a dongle, I would like to know if this laptop is even capable of connecting through displayport. Some representatives have said only Hp thunderbolt 3 usbc ports can use displayport while others believe it will work. Can anyone give me a definitive answer as to whether or not these laptops are capable of using displayport over usb c? or did I seriously buy a laptop in 2018 with no way of connecting to an external display?

Hello @Matt60,

Yes, it should be able to output displays. Every single document I found has some proof that it can output displays. But to be honest, the explicit addition of DisplayPort Alternate Mode in specs is the only proof we really need.

Here are some HP recommended USB-C adapters for this device:

HP USB–C-to-HDMI 2.0 adapter 935325-001

HP USB–C-to-MultiPort hub 919666-001

HP USB–C-to-RJ45 adapter 855560-001

HP USB–C-to-USB–A dongle 833960-001

HP USB–C-to-USB–A hub 916838-001

HP USB–C-to-VGA adapter 831751-001

You can search up those part numbers in a generic search engine or through the HP Parts Store.

If you purchase the above HP adapters and run into issues, you can get support and back up your claim that they're compatible using the Maintenance and Service Guide. Theoretically, a third-party USB-C adapter should work but people do occasionally run into issues.

Best regards,

Eddy

Thank you for your response. I'm going to try a third party adapter first being the Hp ones are a little pricey. If it doesn't work I guess I'll have no choice but to use an Hp one. I'll be back if I run into any problems. Thanks again!

No problem. 🙂

Do let us know how it all goes.

one of my customers use a "Digitus DA-70844" USB-C>DP-Port adapter with a Dell P2417H display, probably it works stable.

with two  of this displays and a "Club 3D SenseVision CSV-1545" adapter, sometimes the second display stay in sleep and he must disconnect all and/or restart the notebook.

other customers use original HP Port Replicators, until now noone give a feedback, this is a sign that all works fine. 🙂

I have a mixed result:
- USB-C to HDMI cable  to a Dell screen worked fine on my HP Envy 13
- USB-C to DVI dongle via DVI cable to another Dell screen did not work: "USB device not recognised"
This same dongle was working fine when connecting my Samsung S8 phone.

Any driver update I can do to make USB-C to DVI dongle work ?

Thanks,

Simon

Just a heads up to anyone curious about what I have experienced with the Envy 13t: Basically the Envy 13t only supports DisplayPort Alt Mode compatible adapters. The reason people have had issues with certain adapters is because DisplayPort Alt Mode is kind of an odd standard to support, most laptops with a thunderbolt or usb-c port use HDMI Alt Mode, meaning that a majority of adapters are not compatible with the Envy 13t. A general rule of thumb would be to only buy an adapter that specifically states that it supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. I use both a Usb-c to DisplayPort adapter made by a company called Uni as well as a Mokin Usb-c to HDMI dock with my Envy 13t, both of which specifically stated they support DisplayPort Alt Mode. I also find that more uncommon or older display port options like DVI or VGA don't support DisplayPort Alt Mode, I would advise people to stick with either usb-c to DisplayPort or HDMI adapters that specifically state they support DisplayPort Alt Mode for the highest chance of success with the HP Envy 13t.
