Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there,

Still pleased with my Spectre X360 15' purchased on Black Friday 2018 and my 3-year warranty expired @3 months ago and it looks like I can't even ask HP a question if I don't purchase a support package? Gee...thanks for that HP.

So I am turning myself over to the community whose support I value more than the manufacturer to be honest and I want to ask a question about driving dual displays.

I have only ever used the laptop screen and it is still one of the best I have seen but when its on the desk and I am doing video editing these tired old eyes are starting to struggle so I would like to take advantage of the dual 27" displays sat on my desk.

In addition I also have the USB-C Dock that has its own HDMI port in addition to the HDMI port on the laptop so shall I assume the best way for me to drive dual displays is by using 2 x HDMI cables - one from the laptop and the other from the Dock? That would suit me as I could then leave one HDMI cable permanently attached to the Dock.

Or would I be best advised using one or both of the USB-C/Thunderbolt ports on the laptop?

If I used both then of course I wouldn't be able to plug the Dock into the laptop so that doesn't seem a good solution!

Would there be any advantage to using the HDMI on the laptop and maybe one of the USB-C ports as well which would mean two different cables.

Just thinking out loud here seeing which way might be the best.

Any help, tips, gotchas etc. would be gratefully received.

Thanks & kind regards,

-=Glyn=-

Hi@GlynH,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!

I see you want to know more details about the dual displays when using the HDMI on the laptop.

  • HDMI port which can be used to connect it to an external monitor via HDMI cable.
  • Usually, the Type C USB port is used for fast charging and not to extend audio or video to an external screen.
  • So using the USB type C adapter shown from the link on Amazon may not work. I am being candid about it and not beating around the bush.
  • Please check this document: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04723006 for more information and assistance.

Most docks feature extra USB-C ports to attach compatible devices or connect to a USB-C display. You can use a USB-C to HDMI. USB-C comes in either 5Gbps or 10Gbps bandwidth varieties. You could also just get a USB-C to HDMI adapter to use with the HDMI cable that comes with the monitor.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for the reply Dilip.

I've had a rethink. The USB-C Dock I have for my Spectre X360 is the Mini which seems to be P/N 928099-001 or 935327-001according to the bottom of the dock itself but why do HP have so many different part numbers for the same device?

However I've recently spotted the HP Elite USB-C Dock G3 with what appears to be various part numbers;

918275-001, 937393-001, 920131-001

This is exactly what I am looking for as it has two DisplayPort outputs capable of 2560x1600 (I need 2560x1440 to drive a 27" Apple Cinema Display)  which means I won't have to faff around with adapters, converters, cables and tying up HDMI port on the laptop etc.

Will this dock work with the HP Spectre X360 15-choo4na do you know Dilip?

Thanks & kind regards,

Hi@GlynH,

Thank you for responding, I appreciate your time and effort.

As per the product specifications the HP Elite USB-C Dock G3 is not compatible with HP Spectre X360.

There are multiple part numbers for the same device could be these are replacement part numbers for the same device.

Please feel free to contact us here anytime you need any further assistance.

Thanks again for the quick reply Dilip even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear! 😆

And here was me thinking USB-C was universal and at least a HP dock should work with a HP computer?

Are you able to recommend a HP dock that has dual DisplayPort that will work with my Spectre X360 please?

Thanks & kind regards,

I apologize for the Inconvenience. The compatible dock for the HP Spectre X360 are Targus USB-C Universal DV4K Docking Station with Power - TAA CompliantIOGEAR USB Type-C Docking Station with Power Delivery and HP USB-C Dock G5. You can purchase it from HP Store.

USB-C Universal DV4K Docking Station with Power, which is Thunderbolt™ 3 compatible and supports both DisplayPort™ and HDMI.
