The past 2 days my screen has been acting weird and would occasionally turn off when I went to adjust the screen position.  Two nights ago, when I walked away I came back and my computer was shut down and when I started it up, the BitLocker recovery screen came up and i entered that and hit recover/restart.    A few times since then,  the screen would just go black (usually when I had my hand near the webcam like I was adjusting the screen) and I could touch the screen with my fingers and it'd come back on, but recently, the screen just stopped working and won't work anymore.   Is there a way to tell if the cable to the screen just became loose/stopped working?

 

I have run diagnostic tests to try and see if it was a driver or anything, but everything says it's running and updated (although I am using an external monitor so I'm not sure if the tests are bypassing the laptop monitor and scanning the external, and in Device Manager it states 'Generic Monitor').   

 

I've tried win-ctrl-shift-B, I've tried to run BIOS but it doesn't show up on my external monitor when I try that, I've deleted and reinstalled graphics drivers etc, so I'm fairly certain its something with the screen.....any way to fix the problem or am I looking at buying a replacement screen to install or just buying a new laptop?

 

Edit: I just realized my BIOS hasn't been updated since 2022 (says F.12 firmware and the latest is F.21), not sure if this would ocntribute to it or not and if I should update this or not

Based on your description, it strongly points to a failing or loose internal display cable—especially since the screen flickered with hinge movement and now remains off while the external monitor works. The BIOS not appearing on the external display further confirms the internal panel isn’t initializing.

 

Here’s a focused guide to help you confirm and potentially resolve the issue:

 

1. Check for Display Backlight or Faint Image

  • Power on the laptop and shine a flashlight at an angle across the screen.
  • Look for a faint HP logo or login screen—this would indicate a backlight failure, not a full panel failure.
  • If nothing appears, it’s likely a signal issue (cable or panel).

 

2. Gently Flex the Hinge Area

  • With the system powered on and the external monitor connected:
    • Gently adjust the screen angle near the webcam or hinge.
    • If the internal screen flickers or flashes briefly, it confirms a loose or damaged eDP cable.

 

3. Run UEFI Diagnostics from USB

This ensures the test targets the internal panel:

  • Download HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Create a bootable USB and insert it into the laptop.
  • Power on and press Esc, then F2.
  • If the internal screen remains black but the external shows diagnostics, the panel is likely disconnected or failed.

 

4. Update BIOS to F.21 (Optional but Safe)

While not the root cause, updating BIOS can help with display initialization:

  • Visit the HP Envy 15-ep1000 BIOS page.
  • Download BIOS version F.21 Rev.A.
  • Run the installer from Windows (on external display).
  • Follow prompts and allow the system to reboot.

This won’t fix a hardware disconnection but ensures firmware isn’t contributing.

 

5. Inspect Internal Display Cable (If Comfortable)

If you’re comfortable opening the device:

  • Power off and unplug the laptop.
  • Remove the bottom cover.
  • Locate the eDP cable running from the motherboard to the display hinge.
  • Gently disconnect and reconnect it, ensuring it’s fully seated.
  • Inspect for pinch marks or fraying near the hinge.

If the cable is damaged, it may need replacement. If the panel connector is intact but the screen remains dead, the panel itself may have failed.
