Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb2000 (90Q68AV)

Hi,

I’m experiencing a recurring issue with my HP Victus 15 (Ryzen 7 8845HS, Radeon 780M + RTX 4060, BIOS F.06, Windows 11 & Fedora 42 dual boot). My external monitor, connected through a USB-C hub with DisplayPort output, is frequently not detected at boot. The screen remains black, and nothing is shown until I restart the laptop, Sometimes I have to flash the firmware again to make it work.

Important details:

  • The issue happens in both Windows and Linux, so it's not OS or driver related.
  • The monitor and hub work fine on other devices.

  • The USB-C port is functional (USB devices work), but video signal fails intermittently.

  • My BIOS is up to date (F.06). The problem was already there on F.05.

  • This appears to be a firmware/BIOS-level issue, as it occurs before the OS even loads.

  • HDMI on laptop works. Already tested this.

  • Sometimes the screen remain black after standby or hibernate.

Has anyone encountered similar behavior? Are there specific BIOS settings or firmware fixes to ensure proper DisplayPort Alt Mode initialization on boot?

Thanks in advance!

@ijsbreker, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The intermittent USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode issues on boot can be frustrating, especially when they persist across both Windows and Linux. Based on your detailed description, here are some steps and recommendations to help resolve or mitigate the issue:

Reset BIOS to Defaults

Sometimes custom BIOS settings can interfere with USB-C initialization.

  • Reboot and press F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Navigate to Exit > Load Setup Defaults.
  • Save and exit.

Disable Fast Boot (BIOS & OS)

Fast Boot can skip USB-C initialization during POST.

  • In BIOS: Disable Fast Boot under Advanced > Boot Options.
  • In Windows:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.

Update USB-C Hub Firmware (if available)

Some USB-C hubs have firmware updates that improve compatibility with Alt Mode. Check the manufacturer’s website.

Use Direct USB-C to DisplayPort Cable (if possible)

To rule out hub-related negotiation issues, try a direct USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

Check for HP Firmware/BIOS Updates

You mentioned you're on BIOS F.06, but it's worth checking for any newer firmware or EC (Embedded Controller) updates:

  • Visit the Official HP® Support
  • Go to Software and Drivers > Select your OS > Check for BIOS or firmware updates.

HP UEFI Diagnostics

Run a hardware diagnostic to rule out USB-C controller issues:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to enter HP Diagnostics.
  • Run the Component Tests > USB Port Test.

Hibernate/Standby Fix (Linux)

For Fedora, try adding the following kernel parameter to improve USB-C wake behavior:

usbcore.autosuspend=-1

Add it to your GRUB config and regenerate GRUB.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
