I just purchased an HP Envy 13-ad1xx (from Costco): https://m.costco.com/.product.100381392.html
I'm trying to connect an external monitor. Nothing I've tried will detect the screen.
I purchased a j5create USB Type-C Multi-Adapter (JCA374) which supports 4k HDMI (DisplayPort Alt Mode Compatible... according to the box)
I connected that to my USB-C port. Then connected my monitor to the box using an HDMI cable.
The monitor is an HP Pavilion 27xw. This is a 1920x1080 monitor and I've switched my laptop to 1920x1080.
When I turn on the monitor it scans the HDMI port for some time and says "no signal" and then turns off.
On the other end, pressing the monitor detect button on the laptop says it can't find any additional monitors.
All other ports on the j5create adapter are working--USBx2 and Ethernet.
The monitor works through HDMI with my other 2 laptops.
The HDMI cable works at 4k between my 4kUHD blu-ray player and my 4kUHD TV in the living room.
I even tried connecting the j5create adapter to external power (which is possible but not required)
Nothing I've tried has made any difference.
Please tell me what I need to replace to get this to work:
-Do I need a different USB-C to HDMI converter or is the j5create compatible with the Envy?
-Do I need to buy a different monitor? If so, what monitor have you used with this laptop that you know works?
If I need to replace the monitor, I'd like a 27" IPS 4K flat (not curved) display... suggestions?
I really don't want to return this laptop. But, if I can't get it working with an external monitor it is pretty much useless to me.
Help!
EDIT: I returned the j5create adapter and purchased an Insignia brand USB-C to HDMI adapter. I also purchased an LG 4K 27" monitor. Everything's working now. I made the salesperson in the computer store show me that the items worked with my laptop before I purchased them.

I'm trying to connect an external monitor. Nothing I've tried will detect the screen.
From page 23 of the User Guide for your HP computer:
Connecting video devices using an HDMI cable
NOTE: To connect an HDMI device to your computer, you need an HDMI cable, purchased separately.
To see the computer screen image on a high-definition TV or monitor,
connect the high-definition device according to the following instructions:
Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the computer.
Connect the other end of the cable to the high-definition TV or monitor.
Press f4 to alternate the computer screen image between 4 display states:
PC screen only: View the screen image on the computer only.
Duplicate: View the screen image simultaneously on both the computer and the external device.
Extend: View the screen image extended across both the computer and the external device.
Second screen only: View the screen image on the external device only.
Each time you press f4, the display state changes.
NOTE: there are 7 ports on the right side of your computer. The HDMI port is the middle port.

Tell us what video-input port(s) your external display device has, and its manufacturer and model-number.
