Welcome to the HP English Community --

Although Windows 11 is indeed slightly different from Windows 10, the following document does include several key checkpoints and is worth a look:

HP Notebook PCs - Fingerprint reader troubleshooting (Windows 10)

======================================================

On those models where a fingerprint reader is available, the feature is almost always optional.

"Optional" means that not every computer in a model series will include this special feature.

and

Fingerprint readers that are not part of every model in a series might not be installed in "your" machine.

For example,

Little fingerprint reader "box" might only be a cover plate and not a real sensor.

Reminder

If the model series offers the feature and your machine does not have a fingerprint reader, you can purchase the part and install it in your system.  The part number(s) and installation procedure will be included in your Maintenance and Service Guide.

Start

Find and open the  Product Home  page for your device.

For example

Results for "hp dragonfly" (11)

Next,

Open Category Setup & User Guides

Next,

Find and open the Maintenance and Service Guide for your computer

Next,

Search the document for "fingerprint" or "fingerprint reader"

For example,

  • If the document does not include mention of the fingerprint reader, the model series does not offer the feature.
  • If the document includes mention but also includes "select" "select models" or similar, then Your machine might not have the reader installed.

Next,

Verify that your computer has a fingerprint reader and not simply a cover plate where the sensor would be located.

Open and Check that the Device Manager includes the Biometric devices section AND detects the fingerprint reader.

Next,

If the fingerprint reader hardware exists and the Device Manager detects the reader,

If you need a driver,

Open Category Software & Drivers

If needful, Set / Change the Operating System / version

Open all to reveal the sub-categories

OR

Click to open sub-category Driver-Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices

Search for an open the entry that includes "Fingerprint"

Download, Save, and Install the driver - Restart the computer and log in

General Example - Device Manager - Biometric devices - Fingerprint Reader / Camera - IR type
