Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)
Whenever I open my laptop I have to put my password to unlock it.For last few days few keys are not working properly for that I have to use on screen keyboard to unlock.Actually my norton antivirus was inactive for past few months. For this I refreshed my laptop and then did the full scan.On scan I found single virus threat which was fixed by norton easily. After doing this the laptop was ok,but again the same problem came back.I do not think it is a hardware problem of the keyboard. The keys that are not working are-
e,d,c,3,f2,f3,f9,f10
Anyone please reply.

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion m4-1003tx Notebook. I read that few of the keys (e,d,c,3,f2,f3,f9,f10) are not working on the laptop. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job. I'll do my best to help you with this case.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Do you have an external USB keyboard to connect and check if the keys work fine?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Let us initiate a hardware test on the keyboard to ensure that there is no hardware issue. The following steps will help.
  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second.

  • The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu is displayed.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI screen

  • Select component tests.

List of the Component tests

  • Please initiate a test on the Keyboard - A quick interactive functional test of the keys on the keyboard. Click Keyboard, then Run once. The Keyboard Test time is 3 minutes.

If the keyboard test passes then please continue with the below steps:

  • Let your laptop boot into Windows.
  • Open the device manager.
  • Expand "keyboard" in device manager. Right click on the keyboard drivers listed and select uninstall.
  • Close the device manager and restart the laptop.
  • During the restart, Windows will automatically reinstall the keyboard drivers.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know how it goes. Have a great day! 🙂

Thank you very much for your detailed stepwise reply.I would like to inform you that by using external keyboard  my proboem goes away.I tried the harware diagnostic UEFI but unfortunately my laptop shows version 5.0 ,so I could not get the proper 'keyboard' option you suggested to go for.Instead i got the options-

Processor

Memory

Hard drive

Battery

System board

Usb port

Video

Wireless module

Main menu.

I ran the processor and system board, and passed on both ocassionScreenshot.I did not test the others because they seemed to be time consuming.I am attaching a screenshot that may help you what I am trying to say. Please give further suggestion.

You're welcome. 🙂

You've been fabulous to work with considering your superb technical skills, remarkable patience and great attitude. Kudos to you for that.

I suggest you to update the UEFI diagnostic menu: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support. Please click on the button shown in the below image:

Once the UEFI is updated, please try to re-run the test.

Hope this helps. Good luck! 🙂

I installed latest UEFI diagnostic,to further proceed it enquires precisely about lay out of the keyboard of my notebook,I chose compact, then again I got a option to choose from three options.this time it asks whether I have menu key and windows key. There is windows key but I do not know what is menu key.So I went for 2 different scans choosing both option 2 and 1.In both occasions it shows the result as failed. On both occasions only 10 keys are showing to be in good condition but originally I have much more keys which are working properly.I am attaching the screenshot of the steps I performed in correct order.I am also attaching a screenshot of new test document, and it will clearly show that there are much more working keys than the results showed.IMG-20170820-WA0001.jpg
