HP ENVY 15 E3S20UA#ABA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

From past around month, i am facing issue where laptop gets powered on but no display comes. Only light on "Caps Lock" key blinks slowly. Initially due to this problem display starts coming after multiple attempts of hard reboot of laptop.

But gradually this problem gets worse and i need to hard reset of laptop by taking off the battery, press power button for 15 sec and then plug in battery. I have placed the new battery provided by HP last year. No issue found with battery and power cord is also charging battery properly.

Can you tell what's the issue as all test (OS, Battery, Performance etc.) came out fine but issue is getting worse.

Thanks in advance.

@Gaurav69,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand your PC boots into a black screen and light on caps lock is blinking. Don't worry I'll be glad to help you.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?

Did this happen after a power surge or power outage? Did this happen after a software or windows update?

Did you perform a Bios update by any chance?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the notebook

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:

  1. If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.

If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.

  2. With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.

  3. With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.

  4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.

For starters please try to roll back the bios from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

Please try both the steps mentioned in the link.

If this does not do the trick, please try all the steps from this link: HP Notebook PCs - Computer Does Not Start (Windows 10)

Alternatively, you can also go through this support document: If the LEDs blink, or the computer beeps, but it does not start, go to HP Notebook PCs - Troubleshooting LED Blink Codes or Beep Codes During Startup or Boot

Could you please respond to this post with the details and with the results of the troubleshooting as this will help me in further assisting you.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

Hi Jeet, thanks for the response and all the details. Was travelling so couldn't respond earlier.

I checked the LED light and it blinks 3 times and then pause briefly and then repeats this sequence.

Also, my BIOS is showing version F.69 for product number E3S20UA#ABA

I checked on HP site and my win OS 10 version is not listed. So I checked Windows Update and there are also no update detected. DO you know from where I can get the latest BIOS for this laptop?

Also to add that I formatted my laptop last year in October and re-installed windows OS. Since then I am facing this issue of laptop taking multiple hard reboots and battery plug-out\plug-in sequence before it turns on.

@Gaurav69

Hi there, thanks for getting back to us. Appreciate you trying the steps. I see that you were interacting with @Jeet_singh but he is out of the office at the moment. Don't worry, I'll be happy to assist you with this. To better assist you - How did you re-install the operating system? Was it from a recovery media or from the recovery partition?

Try this download link for the BIOS.

If you have not tried installing the updates using the HP Support Assistant yet, try these steps -

1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

I'd also suggest you test the hardware of the computer. Run the "Extensive Test". Refer to this document for steps - Testing for Hardware Failures

Let me know.
