HP PAVILION DV6-3060EM
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,
I have HP dv6-3060em with AMD Phenom™ II Triple-Core P820 1.8Ghz and ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650 GPU,

All the drivers are up to date.

Problem is that some of the new games require a better GPU drivers (and are giving me severe graphical errors because old GPU drivers).

The latest driver on the HP page is from 2011 and on the AMD website the drivers for this card are moved to "legacy". Offering me AMD Catalyst 15.7.1 or Crimson 16.2.1.

Problem is that when I try to instal any of these drivers they partialy fail to instal.

Everything but the "graphics driver" is installed.
I get a brand new Catalyst Centre but I also lose all the settings and functions that I have with HP drivers (adjusting GPU setting and Switchable GPU options).

Did anyone else get this problem?

"It seems that the legacy drivers are not even compatible to my GPU. Is this because I have switchable graphics and not just the 5650"

Yes. Switchable graphics notebooks from the generation yours came from are a special case notebook hardware configuration. The drivers are odd. Newer AMD switchable graphics notebook work with the drivers from AMD. Times have changed.

I haven't had one since I had an Omen 17 HP product loan a few years back.

That is actually not what the problem is.

The real issue is, and  you probably won't like my saying this, that your notebook is so far back in generations compared to current units. It also has a low spec processor.

Your notebook is just as much a legacy device as the graphics drivers are.

You might want to consider updating to something a bit more current.

No,  I get what you are saying. And you have some merrit to your argument.

However in terms of CPU and the GPU and RAM the Laptop is more than adequate for this game (World of Tanks) the games minmum spec are even lower that this. 😄

I just need to update the driver for the GPU any way posible.

Problem is that the AMD drivers get rid of the basic functions (since its a switchable AMD graphics between 5650 and 4250).

It seems that the legacy drivers are not even compatible to my GPU. Is this because I have switchable graphics and not just the 5650?

P.s- When this laptop was brand new HP did not bother to update/release new GPU drivers in YEARS. This is the common problem wiht HP. They just dont care about software support. Regardless whether you have a brand new HP or an old one.
The driver offered on the product page of my model is the same one from 2010. (they never updated it).
So it only natural that after 1 year of having a new laptop with no updates to GPU driver that you would try AMD drivers. 🙂

Thank you for the explanation. It seems to be the case what you are saying.

Strange thought that Windows 7 is offering me via their own updates a new driver. Which if god forbid you decide to install will break the GPU.

Whats up with that? Windows givng you bad drivers as optional suggestions?

Windows Update knows nothing about switchable graphics.

Recently Windows Update kept on breaking the audio on my Windows 10 install on this desktop. I had to roll it back to an older version each time it updated for about three weeks.
