I didn’t have this issue until now, but my built in camera driver is acting weird by flickering on and off. Whenever I open the camera, it doesn’t capture the display. This is because when I go into camera settings, the built-in camera keeps appearing and disappearing meaning I can’t configure it whatsoever.
I’ve attached a video to better explain the problem: https://youtube.com/shorts/w9uHGDmvGq0?feature=share
Attempting to get the latest Windows updates and reinstalling the drivers did not help.

Hi @PhilMC_
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue where your built-in camera is flickering on and off, making it impossible to use or configure properly. Since you've already tried reinstalling the drivers and updating Windows with no success, let’s go over some additional troubleshooting steps to hopefully resolve the issue.
1. Check Camera Device in Device Manager
Sometimes the camera might be disabled or misconfigured in Device Manager. Here's what you can do:
- Open Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager.
- Locate your camera:
- In the Device Manager window, expand the Imaging Devices section. You should see your HD Wide Vision Camera listed there.
- Check if there’s an error:
- If there’s a yellow triangle or an error message next to your camera, right-click on it and select Properties. Check for any error codes or messages.
- Uninstall and Reinstall the Camera:
- Right-click the camera device and select Uninstall device. Confirm if asked to remove the driver.
- Restart your computer. Windows should attempt to reinstall the camera automatically.
2. Update or Roll Back Camera Driver
You mentioned reinstalling the drivers didn’t work, but you can also try updating or rolling back the camera driver:
Update Driver:
- In Device Manager, right-click the camera and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts.
Roll Back Driver (if the issue started after a recent update):
- If the camera worked previously and you recently updated the driver, right-click the camera in Device Manager, select Properties, and go to the Driver tab.
- If available, click Roll Back Driver to revert to the previous version.
3. Check Privacy Settings
Windows has privacy settings that could block access to your camera.
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera.
- Make sure Allow apps to access your camera is turned on.
- Scroll down and make sure specific apps (like Skype or Zoom) have access to the camera.
4. Check for Conflicting Software
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

There's a new problem: I uninstalled the camera driver in device manage and planned to reinstall it after restarting my laptop however, when I run "scan for hardware changes", it does not reinstall the camera driver like it did before and now I can't use my laptop camera because the driver won't reinstall. How am I supposed to download the built-in camera driver now?

Hi @PhilMC_,
Thank you for the response.
Since the built-in HD Wide Vision Camera driver is missing and not reinstalling automatically, try these steps:
Check Device Manager for Hidden Devices
- Press Win + X → Select Device Manager.
- Click View → Show hidden devices.
- Look for Imaging Devices or Cameras → Check if the camera appears.
- If found, right-click → Enable.
- If not found, proceed to the next step.
Manually Install the Camera Driver
- Go to HP’s official support page:
- Enter your Laptop Model Name (e.g., HP Pavilion 15, HP Spectre x360).
- Look for "Driver - Camera" and download the latest version.
- Install and restart your laptop.
Install Windows Default Camera Driver
- Open Device Manager.
- Click Action → Add legacy hardware.
- Select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced).
- Choose Imaging Devices → USB Video Device.
- Click Next and install.
Run Windows Update
- Go to Settings → Windows Update → Click Check for updates.
- Expand Advanced options → Optional Updates → Look for a camera driver.
Reset the Camera App
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed Apps.
- Search for Camera, click it, and select Advanced options.
- Click Reset and restart your laptop.
Let me know how it goes.

Unfortunately, the device manager couldn't let me enable the camera so I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it with the "scan for hardware changes" option but it never reinstalled. Tried finding the driver online or optional updates and didn't find anything. Reset camera didn't work either and the legacy driver for it doesn't exist in device manager.
