I have the exact same issue on a brand new HP Pavilion x360 convertible. I tried with 2 HDMI cables, but the laptop doesn't detect my screen.
Laptop was sold directly with Windows 10 and I have removed McAffee already... This is very annoying

Thanks for visiting the HP community. A good day to you. I came across your post where you require assistance regarding HDMI issues on your new computer. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Splendid effort, commendable troubleshooting and superb description of the issue. Kudos to you on that score.
🙂
To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this
- Please let me know the complete model# of the computer.
- I understand that 2 HDMI cables were tried and the monitor is not detected. Have you tried to connect the notebook to an external TV using these HDMI cables and checked if it brings up a display?
Please perform these steps:
Please connect the computer to an external source such as a TV using an HDMI cable.
If it brings up a display then the monitor that you are connecting it to could be faulty.
If it does not work, please update the bios, chipset and audio drivers from this link: http://hp.com/drivers and select the country and follow the on-screen instructions
For further assistance please try all the relevant steps from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-13-a000-x360-convertible-pc/6936239/model/7241884/d... for troubleshooting HDMI issues.
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please. Please note that I am not overloading you with a lot of troubleshooting steps.
Instead, just like you, I am eager to ensure that the problem gets resolved. So I am providing you with more resources and information at your disposal to deal with the situation better.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

David,
Thanks for the help in your post, but the problem here is that I'm just a customer, rather than someone with a technical background like yours. I was told a week ago, when I asked if the spectre would work with an HDMI, that yes, it would.
I've now spent half of Sunday trying to fix (and talking with the support desk) to fix something that should have worked out of the box. Given that I'm not the only user, surely HP should be providing us a fix?
Anyway, here is what I've got:
- I'm using the HDMI to plug into a Samsung television.
- My IPad gets along fine with the Samsung HDMI connection. When I use the HP Spectre, I plug in and get sound and video for about 3 seconds and then it cuts out. And then the video just comes and goes, sometimes with sound, sometimes without it.
- In other words, the HDMI works, but cannot be relied on as it isn't working 80% of the time.
I'm not looking for help; just hoping that HP takes this on board that the reason we buy these devices is to use them. Going home to spend the first days working with the laptop on (literally) 4-6 hours of running updates and another 6 hours fruitlessly trying to make the machine work as promised sucks. We buy them to use them. Not to maintain them.
Cheers,
Ian
